A sultry voice, musing lyrics, combined with a chic flair and original panache for music have made Chantal Ranger a vibrant presence in the Montreal music scene.
Her very personal urban acoustic sound, layered with an ever-present modern lounge, jazz, cabaret feel to both French and English songs, all blend to portray who Chantal Ranger is: A bilingual cultural fusion of theatre, poetry and music.
Chantal's roots and formal training started with the Latin jazz ensemble, 20 First Century Modern, as a back vocalist before making her debut as lead vocalist in musical acts such as Sun Freezing Cold, Big Bad Band and Insteady, all of which she contributed to and collaborated with as a writer. Over the years, she has explored many musical genres ranging from rock to funk, or pop to jazz, allowing her to discover and appreciate each genre for its distinctiveness.
After years of writing, recording, and performing in various clubs and music venues in Montreal and beyond, she decided to further her musical education by studying sound design at Musitechnic, followed by Jazz Singing at the McGill Conservatory of Music. She also studied professional theatre and two vital instruments: the guitar and percussions. As a outcome of all this diversity, Chantal has fused her experience & education to not only shape and enhance her music compositions and writing, but has allowed her to develop her unique style to the genre of modern jazz lounge that is sharp, refined, and oh so original.
Her performance at ``les Nuits de Montréal'', which is part of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, started in 2004 and was a success. It has since followed through with a 2006 performance, giving her a strong position within the Montreal jazz music scene.
Having nurtured her art for many years, Chantal decides to take the leap and create her own record label Makin Waves which allows her to produce her first album produced by guitarist /composer Sari Dajani and distributed by Distribution TRX. With this second album The Plan, released in 2009, she decides to produce it herself in collaboration with guitarist Francis Tétu and bassist Christian Leclair.
Chantal continues to collaborate with Montreal-based musicians in the studio and on stage.

Une voix sensuelle, des paroles inspirées et une approche musicale stylisée caractérisent la présence vibrante de Chantal Ranger sur la scène musicale montréalaise. Le son acoustique urbain très personnel de Chantal, aux influences jazz, cabaret et lounge moderne, trace un fidèle portrait de l’artiste : une combinaison de théâtre, de poésie et de musique dont les racines proviennent des cultures anglophone et francophone.
Chantal a d’abord évolué comme choriste au sein de l’ensemble latin/jazz 20 First Century Modern avant de faire ses débuts en tant que soliste dans des groupes musicaux tels que Sun Freezing Cold, Big Bad Band et Insteady pour lesquels elle a écrit des chansons. Au fil des ans, elle a exploré plusieurs facettes de la musique, allant du rock au funk et du pop au jazz, ce qui lui permet d’apprécier chaque style musical pour ce qu’il est vraiment.
Après plusieurs années de composition et d’enregistrement, Chantal décide de parfaire sa formation musicale en étudiant la conception sonore à Musitechnic, puis le chant jazz au Conservatoire de musique de McGill. Elle a également étudié le théâtre, la guitare et les percussions.
Elle joue à deux reprises aux ‘’Nuits de Montréal’ dans le cadre du Festival International de Jazz de Montréal’’ ainsi que dans diverses salles jazz et bars de la région et ses environs en
s'illustrant partout où elle passe. Forte de cette expérience, elle fonde sa propre étiquette,
Makin Waves et se lance dans la production de son premier album, en collaboration avec Sari Dajani qui signe les arrangements ainsi que la réalisation. Pour le deuxième album The Plan , lancé en 2009, elle décide de le réaliser en collaboration avec le guitariste Francis Tétu et le bassiste Christian Leclair.
